The failure of the federal government to remediate this site is a travesty and one of the most glaring examples of environmental racism in the country! The Navy is directly responsible for the exorbitant rate of cancer, birth defects, asthma, and genetic mutation in the Bay Area.?Michael Ratkewicz ?- Friday, April 08, 2005 at 14:50:20 (PDT)

Four years ago, over 200,000 or 86% of San Francisco's most enlightened voters cast their individual ballots and collective voices in favor of Proposition "P," which required that the entire Hunters Point Naval Shipyard be cleaned of toxic and radioactive substances before development begins. However, corporate welfare combined with political warfare against the poor and disenfranchised took over, undermining the voters and thus, the will of every responsible citizen. ?Death and disease associated with this highly contaminated shipyard is an ever-present danger and a tragic reality - illustrated by the fact, that ten African American babies have died within their very first year of birth over the past eleven months. Worthy of note, is that these babies lived in close proximity to Parcel A where the proposed building of 1,600 new homes is slated to commence. ?The transfer of nearly 100 hundred acres of public land has been permitted over the vehement objection of community residents and sold to Lennar for just $1.00, a mega-million dollar giant housing developer based in Florida. What's more, is that Lennar has been approved for an additional $40 million dollars of YOUR tax dollars through revenue bonds despite Mayor Gavin Newsom declaring a moratorium on bond indebtedness in the city. ?Quite frankly, it is a moral disgrace for those who purport to represent all of San Francisco to support out-of-town profiteers over the best interests of its own people that merely seek a safe and healthy environment in which to live. ?In November 2000, the voters throughout every district of San Francisco sent a clear and compassionate message signifying, that they too are against environmental racism and corporate welfare for the rich and as such, stood forthrightly by the men, women, and children so affected in the historically underserved Bayview Hunters Point community. ?For that reason alone, as a 40 + year resident of San Francisco, I am cognizant of the characteristics which make our great city the number one point of destination in the world. It is not just its panoramic views of bridges, nor beautiful hills and shorelines, but rather our propensity to care for other people that may be socially, economically, or politically different from ourselves. ?In that respect, we as good neighbors and fellow San Franciscan’s must never forget, that ten children of Bayview Hunters Point, in effect, voted for a safe and clean environment with their lives before they even had a chance to fully live. ?Please join me to do ALL that you can by supporting the efforts of San Franciscan’s for Our City’s Health to stop this radioactive toxic dumpsite proposed for housing development on Parcel A of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.?Kevin B. In today's world of "compassion for life,"I am outraged that in San Francisco, the "City that knows how," has a wanton disregard for human life, as is evident as the city allows the building of another Love Canal" on the toxic dump that is the Hunters point Shipyard. ?It has demonstrated no requard to the current residents of Hunters Point who suffer from cancer and other diseases directly due to the city's refusal to clean up the toxic environment that is all of Bay View Hunters Point. ?The city is being governed by Lennar's and other's quest for profits. ?Today, we are governed, by uncaring local, state, and federal governments that do not have a "compassion for life" for its workers and/or the poor who have created the wealth of this society. ?As the song goes:We built this City."?Roland Sheppard ?- Saturday, April 09, 2005 at 10:31:34 (PDT)

The shipyard must be cleaned up before any construction or thousands of innocent people will die due to the realease of toxic chemicals and gases. The shipyard is a superfund site and is not suitable for any development at this time.?Annika Fain ?-Monday, April 25, 2005 at 22:48:35 (PDT)

As someone who has had quite a few loved ones impacted by cancer, I find it criminal and disgusting that the Navy left this land is such a horrible condition. I also find it dispicable and enraging that a developer such as Lennar would not only allow impoverished people be exposed to such toxins, but seek to profit from it as well. This is a battlefront in our own backyards so to speak and I strongly support your cause!?Richard D. Tugade ?- Monday, April 25, 2005 at 22:56:05 (PDT)

(Idriss Stelley Foundation, 3rd ST SF, Bayview Campaign to end the Death Penalty, Bayview ACORN) ?I have signed this petition for myself and on behalf of ISF. ?I am a BVHP resident, and have many local friends suffering new onsets of respiratory diseases and cancer. Obvouisly the lives of poor people of color has not meant much to our city government up to now. 2 thumbs up for public health to do us justice ! All parcels have to be cleaned up before any construction?mesha Monge-Irizarry ?- Friday, April 29, 2005 at 13:51:13 (PDT)

The shipyard development must not go forward. There is mounting evidence that the release of toxic substances in buildings and soil will compromise the residents of the surrounding BVHP community and construction and excavation workers. These substances include asbestos, lead, arsenic, manganese and radionuclides. The dust control plan Lennar Developers released earlier in the year will not even offer air monitoring for the release of these toxic substances.?Dr. Ahimsa Porter Sumchai ?- Wednesday, June 08, 2005 at 15:24:13 (PDT)

In recent days it has been revealed about SWEET HEART DEALS with the developers at Treasure Island. It so happens the same key developers are involved with Hunters Point Shipyard and more importantly with Parcel A. We see NO " term sheet " when it comes to both these sites - Hunters Point Parcel A and Treasure Island. We see the same cronies at SF City Hall involved with the developers with NO Accountability and Transparency. It is just a matter of time when the Media will reveal what we here having been saying from day one - Sweet Heart Deals, No Term Sheet, No time lines with concrete goals, No meaningful dialog with the constituents - in short crooks doing as they please. It is a shame the SF Board of Supervisors agreed to convey Parcel A and betrayed the constituents of San Francisco. It is a shame that without fully understanding what was happening at Treasure Island - the SF Board of Supervsiors permitted certain processes to go forward at Treasure Island adversely impacting all the constituents from San Francisco and beyond. We can say the same today of Parcel A and Hunters Point Shipyard. ?At Hunters Point Shipyard it is critical to look at the Cumulative Impact of Pollution - especially when it relates to radiological elements. It is critical to observe over the last 15 years the adverse impacts on people of color in the neighboring area on Hunters Point Shipyard. It is very critical that there be meaningful dialog and that the community and constituents be informed about the TRUTH. ?Francisco Da Costa ?Director ?Environmental Justice Advocacy ?4909 3rd Street ?San Francisco,CA 94124

- Friday, March 17, 2006 at 09:42:57 (PST)Black people help build that Ship Yard, that would later cause untold suffering to them, and their families. It is now time for fairness and equity to take place. The full clean up and respecting the health of all people, of all colors, would be a respectful and moral step in that direction.

It is our moral duty to clean up the Hunters Point Shipyard. Towards that end I lend my total support.
I wish San Franciscans for Our City's Health all the very best.

- Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 06:41:02 (PST)There comes a time when the First People the Muwekma Ohlone should take a stand and speak for what is right. Parcel A on Hunters Point Shipyard is dirty. The 1600 homes should not be built in the middle of Chernobyl. Parcels B, C, D, E, and F under water should all be cleaned or abated. I am glad that San Franciscans for Our City's Health is moving in the right direction.
